How Many Driving Lessons Do You Need Before A Test?

If you are thinking of getting you driving license and you are checking prices, it's sure you know that the cost of practical classes is one of the most relevant variables. At this point, it is important to know how many lessons you will need to have so you are well prepared for your driving test. The truth is that there is no single answer to this question, however on OneHowTo.com we give some guidance on how many practical driving lessons you need before a test.

Steps to follow:

1

The first thing you need to know is that the DVLA (UK) does not have a minimum number of lessons or hours that you must practice driving before taking your test. So in fact, you could take your test without taking practical classes. This also applies for Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

In many states of the US, if you are underage it is required you do at least six hours of driving lessons.

However, in Ireland it is mandatory to sit through 12 driving lessons at least.

2

However, this is not feasible. First, because it is almost impossible to pass the test if you have not done any practice and, second, because it is difficult to find a driving school that wants to send you to take a test without having practiced. Thus, driving schools will usually require you to do, at least, one lesson, to learn how to drive before taking the test. You can take the test without going through a driving school, but it is not very profitable.

3

The economic crisis has made students want to minimize the number of driving lessons, to save money, but the result is that more people fail the practical exam. With this, it becomes clear that driving lessons are really an investment and should not be viewed merely as an expense.

4

When determining how many practical driving lessons are necessary, your driving instructor is a professional who can advise you. If, for whatever reason, you already know how to drive, it will probably suffice to take five practical lessons in order to pass your driving test the first time.

This usually happens with people who have mentors or designated driving tutors who can teach you without the need to pay for lessons.

If, however, you do not know how to drive and also do not have much skill, you will need up to 30 practical lessons to get your driving license. In this case, we recommend that you take a look around to find the driving school that offers the best prices without reducing the quality of training.

6

There are other future drivers who need many more than 30 lessons to pass the exam. The important thing is to listen to your driving instructor and let him advise you. Remember that driving a car is an activity that can be very dangerous. Many people die each year on the road.

With these considerations, we hope that you now have a rough idea of how many practical driving lessons are necessary to obtain a driver's license.

Hi Robert,

While it is possible, it is unlikely you will pass since if you don't know the specific rules of the road. You may have picked up some bad habits which would fail you during your test, something a driving instructor can help with. It also provides a safety issue as you may need the practice to be competent behind the wheel.

Thanks for the great information, I can see this article being particularly helpful if someone lives too far away from any formal driving schools. I'm very surprised that the recommended number of practical driving lessons is thirty if you've never driven before. However, considering how important it is to know what you're doing to stay safe on the road, I can see why such a large number would be necessary.
