The first thing you need to do in order to clean your air filter, is to locate the air filter in your car. You'll find it in the engine - normally inside a dark plastic box that has a plastic tube sticking out.
You'll need to use a screwdriver to remove the air filter from its place.

Once you've removed your air filter, you'll be able to see all the dirt that it has filtered out, showing how effective the filter actually is. Then, you can simply clean it with a vacuum cleaner.
To make sure you get all the dirt off all the parts, use a lightly damp cloth to clean the inside, making sure not to apply any pressure or to scrub.
How frequently you clean the air filter will depend on the sorts of places you go in your car, so you'll have to clean it more often if you regularly drive along dirt roads than if you only drive along normal roads. In any case, car manuals usually give instructions about when to clean the air filter.
