How to Clean your Car's Air Conditioning System

All sorts of microorganisms can proliferate in air conditioning ducts, leading to unpleasant musty smells and even, in extreme cases, transmitting diseases. Therefore, it is extremely important to remember to clean the car's AC system as thoroughly as you clean the rest of your vehicle.

If you're unsure how to do it, read this oneHOWTO article on how to clean your car's air conditioning system and get to work.

Steps to follow:
1

You should clean your car's air conditioning system every six months. This will prevent the accumulation of dirt and bacteria that can cause bad smells or even damage the air-conditioning system.

2

The first step to clean an AC system is to remove moisture from the ducts. To do this, stop the car but leave the engine running and turn the heater up high. The air conditioning must be off.

Get out of the car and leave the doors and windows closed for about five minutes. This will remove moisture and lower the likelihood of bacteria proliferation in the air ducts.

3

After removing the moisture, you have to apply a decontaminating product for bacterial, fungal and mite infestations. You can buy it in any specialized car parts store.

4

With the product at hand, turn off the car's heater and turn on the air-conditioning system to the maximum level. Keep all doors and windows closed, except for the passenger door.

5

While your vehicle is outside, place the product on the car floor, on the passenger side. Press it down for half a minute, trying not to breathe it in. You can wear a protective mask.

6

After thirty seconds, close the passenger door and allow the product to diffuse inside the car, leaving the air-conditioning system on and staying outside the vehicle.

7

Let the AC cleaning product work its magic for five minutes. Then, open the car and turn off the air-conditioning system. Now, before using your car, ventilate it well by leaving doors and windows open for at least half an hour.
