How to Jump-start a Motorbike with a Flat Battery

Starting a motorbike with a flat battery (or a car for that matter) is not great for the vehicle and should only be resorted to in an emergency. This is because kick or jump starting a motorbike when the battery has died can cause damage to the mechanical system. It is best to charge the motorbike battery yourself or have it taken to a garage. Regardless, OneHowTo will explain how to start a motorbike with a flat battery when you need to use the vehicle urgently.

Steps to follow:
1

The first thing you have to do to start a bike without battery is to turn on the ignition, so that, when the engine is started, all will be prepared to move with relative normality. Stand at the side of the bike, so you can have access to the controls.

2

Then, put it in third or fourth gear and move the bike forward slightly, without forcing it, until you can go no further. The reasons for doing so when starting a bike with no battery are purely mechanical. You want the cylinder to be very close to neutral, making it easier to start when given a push.

3

Once you've taken this first step to jump-start the engine, activate the clutch and push the bike using all the strength you can muster. When you hear that the engine has already been started, you must jump on the bike while you release the clutch, and use as normal.

4

As you can imagine, this is somewhat dangerous because you will have to run alongside the bike. You should not wait for it to speed up much before jumping on, as you risk falling on the road and injuring yourself and the bike.

5

As stated above, starting a bike without battery is not recommended and should always be the last resort, in cases of emergency.

6

Carrying out good battery maintenance for you bike is key to avoiding finding yourself in this situation. See this link for some tips on how to care for your bike.
