Why does my Motorcycle Engine make a Noise

One of the most common problems that motorbikes develop is an increase in the amount of noise it makes. This noise may be caused by several different factors or problems and there's also the possibility of it turning into a much more serious fault. Before taking the vehicle to a garage, we'll recommend a few steps that may help you solve the issue by yourself. At OneHowTo.com we'll give you a detailed explanation of why your motorcycle engine is making so much noise.

Steps to follow:

Excessive noise from the motorbike can be due to various problems but, first and foremost, you should check the engine. Listening, in this instance, will help you to analyse the problem more carefully. For this, a mechanic's stethoscope is recommended as it is fairly inexpensive and very useful.

Listen to key parts of the engine to see if they any are noisier than usual. We recommend listening carefully to the tension mechanism and valve caps. If the noise is excessively mechanical or ticking, the problem may be the chain tensioner, which may need replacing. If the noise is like a ticking sound, you should take a look at the spacer or plugs because they may not be in good condition.

It is also possible that the problem is simply because something is not fixed securely in place. The tubing, for example, may have fallen due to general wear and tear of the bike. It is important that you check it. Leaks are common and it might well be this which is causing the excessive noise.

If the problem is technical, due to the engine being too cold, bear in mind that the engine should stop making noise after you have ridden it for a while and it has warmed up.

Check the oil levels in your motorbike, the problem may be that it needs an oil refill.

5

It is common for tubing from unofficial brands to cause compatibility issues and this normally manifests itself as excessive noise. If you bought a second-hand motorbike, check that the part is the right one to make sure that this is not what is causing your bike to be so noisy.

6

If you do not manage to solve the problem with any of these methods, visit your local garage in order to avoid any nasty surprises whilst on the road. Also remember that it is important to solve the noise problem as soon as possible in order to avoid any further issues.

The engine block of my bike makes some rattling sound when I start it in the morning when the engine is cold. The sound stops when the engine is warm. Could it be the chain tensioner that is causing the problem? What does the chain tensioner do?
